Effect on health of occupational silica exposure in foundries

, : Effect on health of occupational silica exposure in foundries. Taiwan Yi Xue Hui Za Zhi. Journal of the Formosan Medical Association 84(10): 1165-1172

One hundred and seventy-nine workers in a big foundry in north Taiwan were included to study the effect on their health of occupational silica exposure. This study adopted air sampling by area and group examinations and assessed the characteristics of working environmental dusts, job types and workers' health disorders. Among the work environment, the range of TWA for respirarable dust concentrations less than 5 .mu.m is 0.3-112 mg/m3 which was higher than TLV. The dust contained SiO2 8-35%, Fe 0.5-28%, geometric mean of particle diameter 1.7-3.7 .mu.m. The finer the dusts produced directly from work, the higher the percentage of workers' complaints. It is closely related to the distribution of particles less than 3.3 .mu.m diameter. 1.7% of the workers suffered from tuberculosis and 3.9% calcification disorder. Twenty percent of the workers suffered from pulmonary disorders. By job types, 20.6% of the melting iron workers and the pouring melt iron workers respectively had restrictive respiratory disorders; 20% of sand molders, 100% of overhead hoist drivers, 40% of grinders and 9% of other workers had obstructive respiratory disorders. Mean values of pulmonary functions, FEV1, % FEV1/FVC and % of predicted values were lower than normal values in all workers.
