Effectiveness of fenitrothion bait sprays against melon fruit fly dacus cucurbitae in bitter gourd

, : Effectiveness of fenitrothion bait sprays against melon fruit fly dacus cucurbitae in bitter gourd. Indian Journal of Animal Research 16(1): 41-46

Fenitrothion and malathion were sprayed on a bitter gourd crop twice, alone or in combination with attractants, at 10 day intervals, for the control of melon fruit fly, D. cucurbitae Coquillet. Five attractants, gur, molasses, dried mango juice, citronella oil and protein hydrolysate, were used with fenitrothion; with malathion, only gur was mixed. A positive correlation between infestation and number and weight of fruit was evident. Lowest fruit fly attack was recorded in plots sprayed with fenitrothion in combination with protein hydrolysate or molasses. Use of fenitrothion with all the attractants, except with citronella oil, proved significantly better than the recommended bait spray consisting of malathion and gur. Fenitrothion spray without any attractant, however, was as effective as malathion-gur bait spray.
