Effects of nifedipine slow release tablet on cerebral circulation

, : Effects of nifedipine slow release tablet on cerebral circulation. Current Therapeutic Research 44(3): 485-492

One tablet of nifedipine slow-release preparation (20 mg) was administered twice daily for eight weeks to ten patients (.gtoreq. 65 years old) with hypertension complicated by ischemic cerebrovascular disease (cerebral arteriosclerosis and sequelae of cerebral apoplexy). Change in cerebral circulation, blood pressure, and pulse rate as well as side effects were evaluated before and after drug administration. Cerebral blood flow was unchanged in six patients (60%), and increased in four patients (40%), but decreased in none. Cerebrovascular resistance decreased in all patients. No significance difference was observed in blood flow nor in vascular resistance between the internal carotoid and the vertebral arteries. Both systolic and diastolic pressure significantly decreased after drug administration, but no significant change was observed in pulse rats. No side effects except for mild symtpoms of dizziness and general malaise and hot flashes in two patients were observed. These results showed the usefulness of nifedipine slow-release tablet in treating hypertension complicated by ischemic cerebrovascular disease in the elderly.
