Effects of topical treatment with timolol on the lacrimal flow

, : Effects of topical treatment with timolol on the lacrimal flow. Bollettino di Oculistica 58(9-10): 531-536

In 30 eyes suffering from glaucoma the treatment with 0.25% timolol produced a decrease of lacrimal flow as measured by Schirmer I and II tests. The B.U.T. and the lysozyme lacrimal concentration were decreased while the lacrimal immunoglobulins were unchanged. Some of the eyes showed a slight staining with fluorescein and rose-bengal, that in most cases spontaneously disappeared during the treatment. The decrease of lacrimal flow produced by timolol does not seem to be a contraindication for the use of the drug. Caution is needed in eyes suffering from hyposecretion syndrome.
