We studied the ultrastructure of the lung of four sheep after an infusion of paraquat (30 mg/kg) to relate lung vascular changes and lung neutrophils to lung lymph responses. The damage to the alveolar type 1 epithelial cell and alveolar endothelial cell was first detected at 5 and 7 hr, respectively. The number of lung neutrophils increased to only 3 to 4 times the base line value at 10 hr. We conclude that the pulmonary alveolar endothelial cell and alveolar type 1 epithelial cell are targets for paraquat. Neutrophils may not account for the permeability change and their accumulation in the lung may be a consequence of paraquat-induced lung cells damage.
