Enchytraeidae oligochaeta living in waste deposits and grassland areas

, : Enchytraeidae oligochaeta living in waste deposits and grassland areas. Drosera 84(1): 17-40

Enchytraeid communities of 3 areas on former refuse tips and of 3 adjacent grassland areas were studied from July 1978 to June 1979. Twelve cylindrical soil samples of 15 cm length, cut into 3 equal units of 100 cm3 each were extracted by the method of O'Connor (1955) at each sampling occasion. Biomass was calculated according to Edwards (1967). Soil data indicate obvious differences between the refuse tip covers and the neighboring grassland, but enchytraeids were found in all plots indicating high adaptation to extreme habitats and taking part even in the very beginning of faunistic succession on raw soils. A comparison between 2 equally aged but differently treated sites on a former refuse tip (undisturbed succession vs. cattle grazing) showed, durng 9 mo. of study, significant differences in density and biomass of enchytraeids. Soil compaction by cow trampling reduced the pore space while on the successional site the enchytraeid community developed positively. Density and biomass in the upper 15 cm of soil layer were found to be in the range of published data of the north European region.
