Fear survey response as a function of item specification

, : Fear survey response as a function of item specification. Perceptual and Motor Skills 45(3 Pt 2): 1246-1246

The validity of fear survey questionnaires has been questioned. In an attempt to explain this predictive failure, human subjects were presented with a survey in which level of descriptive detail of self-report measures of fear varied. As the level of descriptive detail increased, so did the correlation between self-report and avoidance behavior. Whether college students would alter their predictions of avoidance behavior when questions were rephrased slightly was investigated. Slight changes in the descriptive detail of the self-report measure may produce significant behavioral and subjective assessment differences.
