Genetic analysis of common tern sterna hirundo eggs

, : Genetic analysis of common tern sterna hirundo eggs. Genetika 14(4): 609-613

Eggs [75] from 25 ovipositions of the common tern (S. hirundo) collected on the sand-banks of the Corfu Gulf (Kamchatka) were generally analyzed. The background color of the common tern egg shell is hypothetically determined by the locus ScI having no allelic genes and determining white-cream color and by 2 non-linked loci ScII (with allelic codominant genes ScIIG (green color) and ScIIO and by the locus ScIII (with the alleles ScIIIB (brown color) and ScIIIO). The frequences of genes pScIIG, pScIIO, pScIIIB and pScIIIO were 0.430 .+-. 0.40, 0.570, 0.520 .+-. 0.41 and 0.480, respectively. The intrapopulational variation of S. hirundo eggs proved to be genetically determined: for the width-approximately by 60% (r [correlation coefficient] = 0.69 .+-. 0.05; h2 [heritability coefficient] = 0.62), for the weight-by 55% (r = 0.54 .+-. 0.10; h2 = 0.61), for the length-by 50% (r = 0.53 .+-. 0.06; h2 = 0.53) and for the shape (oval index) -by 40% (r = 0.37 .+-. 0.08; h2 = 0.40).
