Geographical distribution of 2 color forms of chrysolina aurichalcea coleoptera chrysomelidae in the island of shikoku japan

, : Geographical distribution of 2 color forms of chrysolina aurichalcea coleoptera chrysomelidae in the island of shikoku japan. Annotationes Zoologicae Japonenses 52(4): 277-288

The geographical distribution of a 2 color forms, cyaneus and cupreus, of C. aurichalcea (Mannerheim) (Chrysomelinae), in the Island of Shikoku (Kagawa, Tokushima, Ehime and Kochi Prefectures), is reported for 40 populations. Cupreus index (1c,%), defined as a rate of the cupreus form in a given population, is newly proposed. Major findings are the Ic values in the Sanuki Plain (Population no. 1 to 4) situated north of the Sanuki Mountains are low and slightly fluctuate (3.4 to 14.7) in agreement with the tendency in the eastern coastal zone of the Chugoku District along the Seto Inland Sea; the 2 populations (no. 15 and 16) from the Niihama lowland north of the central part of the Shikoku Mountains show considerably high Ic values (34.6, 44.2); the Ic values are quite stable and very low (11.9 to 14.9) for the 5 populations (no. 14, 17, 18, 21 and 22) from the northwestern area of the island along the Seto Inland Sea; this trend corresponded to the existence of a clear dimorph-ratio geographical cline in the northeastern to southwestern areas of the Chugoku District along the Seto Inland Sea; the Ic values are considerably stable and exceed .apprx. 50% in most localities of the northeastern area of the island, corresponding to those in the coastal zone of the southwestern part of the Kii Peninsula, Kinki District; the 8 populations (no. 24, 34 to 40) from the southwestern area of the island show a considerable dominancy of the cupreus form (Ic = 55.3 to 80.4). Other pronounced tendencies in this dimorph-ratio geographical distribution of this species are indicated. The similar distributional pattern seen in certain species of insects, millipeds, spiders and salamanders is considered and biogeographical problems posed by the species are discussed.
