Inactivating effects of uv rays and ozone on cockroach aggregation pheromones of 4 species

, : Inactivating effects of uv rays and ozone on cockroach aggregation pheromones of 4 species. Medical Entomology & Zoology 32(1): 29-36

Inactivating effects of UV rays and ozone on cockroach aggregation pheromones were examined. Aggregation pheromones were extracted with methyl alcohol from the feces of 4 spp. of cockroaches, Periplaneta americana, P. fuliginosa, P. australasiae and Blattella germanica. Preference tests were carried out to compare the differences among test filter papers. The cockroach pheromones were inactivated by short-wave UV irradiation at a dose rate of 110 .mu.W/cm2 per s for 5-10 min (dose = 33,000 .mu.W/cm2 or 66,000 .mu.W/cm2), as well as by the exposure in .apprx. 0.2 ppm ozone for 5 min. Aggregation pheromones included in the cockroach feces were inactivated by irradiating the short-wave UV rays for < 1 h (dose = 396,000 .mu.W/cm2).
