Changes of frequencies at 10 blood group and milk protein loci over 4.6 generations indicate an inbreeding increment of 1.43% per generation in the Murnau-Werdenfelser breed which give an effective population size of 34. Over 4.9 generations Bavarian Fleckvieh showed an inbreeding increment of 0.35% per generation, equivalent to Ne = 149. The present size of the Murnau-Werdenfelser population points to an inbreeding increment of 2.35% per generation. The relative small Ne of the Fleckvieh indicates the importance of hierarchy and of elite strata in this breed in spite of extensive AI. Comparison of published estimates of inbreeding increments indicates that changes of marker gene frequencies and pedigree analyses yield comparable inbreeding increments. Numerically large breeds of cattle, horses and sheep have comparable inbreeding increments and thus effective population sizes which seem to vary around 100. Inbreeding increments of about 0.5 and above seem to be tolerable.
