Inhibition of ethylene synthesis and senescence in carnation dianthus caryophyllus by ethanol

, : Inhibition of ethylene synthesis and senescence in carnation dianthus caryophyllus by ethanol. Journal of the American Society for Horticultural Science 105(1): 141-144

Ethanol in the holding solution inhibited climacteric ethylene synthesis and delayed senescence of carnation (D. caryophyllus L.) flowers up to 230% over distilled water controls. The effect of ethanol in delaying senescence varied among experiments; decorative life of flowers held in 0.5% ethanol was greater in 1 experiment than flowers held in a 4% solution in another experiment. Decorative life of flowers held in ethanol solutions of 0.5% or greater was always superior to flowers held in distilled water. Once climacteric ethylene synthesis had started ethanol was not effective in inhibiting ethylene synthesis or delaying senescence.
