Synthetic colors are used by humans in a variety of foodstuffs, cosmetics, textiles and medicinal products. Although these food dyes showed no biological activity in bacterial mutagenesis testing, there is evidence that these same food dyes are capable of transforming cultured rat-embryo fibroblasts.
