Lack of photosynthetic pathway flexibility in the cam plant agave virginica l. agavaceae

, : Lack of photosynthetic pathway flexibility in the cam plant agave virginica l. agavaceae. Photosynthetica (Prague) 21(3): 273-280

Photosynthetic pathway flexibility (C3-CAM) was examined in Agave virginica that grows in mesic environments of the southeastern U.S.A. Analyses of 24-h CO2 exchange, fluctuations in titratable acidity, and stable carbon isotope ratios indicated that adult plants exhibited only CAM under drought and well-watered conditions. Some evidence of a contribution of daytime (C3) CO2 uptake was noted in the seedlings, although the evidence was not unequivocal. Thus, although A. virginica appears to differ in its photosynthetic metabolism from its desert counterpart A. deserti, CAM is most likely the predominant mode of CO2 fixation in both species.
