Lack of protein polymorphism in the endemic relict chrysosplenium iowense saxifragaceae

, : Lack of protein polymorphism in the endemic relict chrysosplenium iowense saxifragaceae. Canadian Journal of Botany 63(11): 2031-2034

The narrowly endemic Chrysoplenium iowense was electrophoretrically surveyed for 18 enzyme-protein systems. No variation in eight clearly resolved enzyme loci was found in 210 nodes from five sites located in the driftless region of northeastern Iowa [USA]. Ten other enzyme and protein systems were either not present or not mobile on starch gel. The biology of this species is consistent with that proposed for narrow endemics that have low levels of genetic variability, except that this species has a high ploidal level.
