Lack of repair of uv light damage in mycoplasma gallisepticum

, : Lack of repair of uv light damage in mycoplasma gallisepticum. Journal of Molecular Biology 116(2): 337-344

The repair capabilities of M. gallisepticum, 1 of the smallest free-living cells, having a genome size of only 4.6 .times. 108 daltons were studied. The data show that these cells have neither dark repair nor photoreactivation mechanisms for the repair of UV induced DNA damage. No other prokaryotes were reported to lack kinds of repair systems. Studies of irradiated cell DNA indicate that the UV-induced pyrimidine dimers cannot be excised and block further replication. The photoreactivation experiments also showed that M. gallisepticum is photoinactivated.
