Lactate dehydrogenase ec 1.1.1.27 and creatine kinase ec 2.7.3.2 activities in isolated edema fluid and peripheral blood in cold induced brain edema

, : Lactate dehydrogenase ec 1.1.1.27 and creatine kinase ec 2.7.3.2 activities in isolated edema fluid and peripheral blood in cold induced brain edema. Pfluegers Archiv European Journal of Physiology 386(1): 71-76

Alterations in lactate dehydrogenase (LD) and creatine kinase (CK) isoenzyme patterns in isolated grey and white matter edema fluid and in peripheral blood were studied for possible clinical use in severe brain injury. The blood-brain barrier breakdown caused by the infliction of a cold injury to cat cerebral cortex resulted in a shift in the LD isoenzyme distribution in favor of the faster moving fractions and the appearance of brain-type CK in the peripheral blood. Total lactate dehydrogenase activity demonstrated no statistically significant changes during the experiment; total CK showed only slightly increased values in the samples collected simultaneously with the infliction of a cold lesion. Measurements of these parameters in peripheral blood are apparently of little value as brain damage indicators. Alterations in isoenzyme patterns observed in edema fluids are reflected in peripheral blood. The presence of brain-type CK accompanied by a relative high amount of lactate dehydrogenase H-subunit in peripheral blood can be considered as adequate indices of severe brain damage.
