Lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes in pleural effusions of cancer

, : Lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes in pleural effusions of cancer. Jikeikai Medical Journal 31(3): 303-312

Pleural fluid lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and LDH isoenzymes were studied in 43 samples from patients with carcinoma. In 3 of them, clinical course was observed with regard to pleural fluid LDH and LDH isoenzymes. LDH isoenzyme pattern was divided into 5 types: type II, III, AII, V and I. In type II, the pleural fluid LDH/serum LDH ratio is < 1 (permeation of LDH). In type AII and V, the ratio is > 1 in pleural fluid LDH/serum LDH ratio (focal production of LDH). When pleural fluid LDH was indicated to flow into circulating blood, this phenomenon was called a leak.
