Lactate dehydrogenase ontogeny in the genus brachydanio cyprinidae

, : Lactate dehydrogenase ontogeny in the genus brachydanio cyprinidae. Journal of Heredity 68(2): 81-86

The ontogeny of lactate dehydrogenase isozymes (LDH) was examined in the zebra danio, the pearl danio and in their reciprocal hybrids using acrylamide gel electrophoresis. The tissue specific patterns in both species were similar to those reported for other cyprinids. During development (at 26.degree. C) in both species, B4 and AB3 isozymes were continuously present. At stage 20, a time when embryos undergo initial muscle contraction, the A4 isozyme appeared. The state of muscle cell differentiation and/or the physiological function of muscular contraction may provide the stimulation necessary to activate the Ldh-A locus in skeletal muscle. The developmental progression of LDH isozymes containing A and/or B subunits was similar in hybrids from reciprocal crosses. The activation of the Ldh-C locus, as indicated by the appearance of the C3B and C4 isozymes, was correlated with the decreasing yolk reserves in larval fishes. Analysis of the zymograms and reciprocal hybrids revealed a maternal pattern of C locus activation.
