Least squares fitting of the lognormal curve

, : Least squares fitting of the lognormal curve. Computers & Biomedical Research 14(3): 240-247

Problems arising in nonlinear least squares fitting of the 1st part of the lognormal curve to data are analyzed. No evidence of the existence of multiple local minima of the sum of squares was found. Severe convergence problems arise, especially if the data points do not indicate the point of inflexion. This is caused by the fact that for small values of the running variable in the lognomral formula with respect to the localization parameter, the lognomral curve with 3 parameters can be approximated closely by the exponential curve with 2 parameters.
