Mass production of angoumois grain moth sitotroga cerealella lepidoptera gelechiidae

, : Mass production of angoumois grain moth sitotroga cerealella lepidoptera gelechiidae. Polskie Pismo Entomologiczne 46(1): 187-200

The method for rearing S. cerealella is described and is a modification of that proposed by Stain (1960). The insects were reared in specially constructed containers in which constant temperature and humidity were maintained. The main advantage of this method is the considerable saving in labor compared with traditional methods. The method permitted about 350 thousand eggs to be obtained from 1 kg of barley grain, .apprx. 100,000 more than that obtained by the traditional method of rearing in large cages containing 25 kg grain. Collecting the moths was simple and was reduced to the periodic exchange of the containers which contained adults. The exchange of the containers was made 2-3/day. This operation took 2-4 min, while previously the transference of imagines from the cages into jars took 40-50 min. This rearing method permits a maximum catch of the emerging imagines; losses are minimal, and a more or less constant number of eggs (.apprx. 10-12 cm3 or 200-250 thousand eggs) is obtained. This is important for continuous culture of parasitic Trichogramma spp. and certain predaceous insects (bugs, lacewings, ladybird beetles used.
