Migration of peritoneal polymorphonuclear leukocytes in the rat

, : Migration of peritoneal polymorphonuclear leukocytes in the rat. Journal of Pathology 128(1): 15-20

The migration of PMN [polymorphonuclear leukocytes] into inflammatory sites in the rat was studied using elicited peritoneal cells. These cells exhibited normal random migration and phagocytosis in vitro, but their chemotactic response towards activated serum was significantly reduced when compared to cells isolated from peripheral blood. When injected i.v., peritoneal cells not only showed a greatly diminished ability to accumulate in inflammatory exudates, but also blocked the migration of peripheral PMN. While PMN obtained from the peritoneum may be suitable for some studied, they are not representative of peripheral cells with respect regarding their ability to accumulate in inflammatory exudates due to implanted inert sponges.
