New distributional and ecological records of ground beetles coleoptera carabidae from southwestern alaska usa

, : New distributional and ecological records of ground beetles coleoptera carabidae from southwestern alaska usa. Coleopterists Bulletin 42(1): 39-42

Recent investigations into the Quaternary paleoecology of southwestern Alaska (Elias et al. 1986) included the collection of the modern beetle fauna of this region during the summers of 1983-1985 by the author and two associates from the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, University of Colorado (INSTAAR). We collected beetles from 21 localities in two geographic regions: the southern Nushagak lowland and the Holitna lowland of the interior (Fig. 1). The Southern Nushagak lowland region is primarily coastal tundra just beyond the limit of spruce forest and the Holitna lowland is in the boreal forest zone. Neither region has received much previous attention by collectors, and because of this numerous new state and regional records have been established. Beetles other than Carabidae have been submitted to taxonomists in the Coleoptera section, Biosystematics Research Centre (Ottawa) for identification. All Carabidae specimens collected have either been identified by the author with the aid of Lindroth's (1961-1969) keys and Goulet's (1983) Elaphrus key, or by George Ball, as noted in Table 1. The specimens are contained in the INSTAAR insect collection, maintained by the author. Table 1 shows the carabid species collected at the various sites.
