O di nitro benzene and m di nitro benzene and their derivatives as reagents in the analysis of organic drug preparations

, : O di nitro benzene and m di nitro benzene and their derivatives as reagents in the analysis of organic drug preparations. Farmatsevtychnyi Zhurnal (Kiev) 31(5): 26-29

The o- and m-isomers of dinitrobenzene produce a characteristic color reaction with compounds with an active methylene group. o-Dinitrobenzene reacts with reducing agents, e.g., polyphenol, ascorbic acid, epinephrine and streptomycin. 4,5-Dinitroveratrole and 3,4-dinitrobenzoic acid react with reducing sugars. m-Dinitrobenzene can be used in colorimetric assays of sex hormones and cardiac glycosides. 3,4-Dinitrobenzoic acid was used in assaying cardenolides from plant material and 17-ketosteroids. syn-Trinitrobenzene, 3,5-dinitrophenylsulfonic acid, 2,4-dinitrophenylsulfone and picric acid, used in identifying cardiac glycosides, are also reviewed. Picric acid is also used to assay alkaloids.
