Observations on colony founding and migration of dinoponera gigantea

, : Observations on colony founding and migration of dinoponera gigantea. Journal of the Georgia Entomological Society 15(4): 466-469

A new colony of D. gigantea was founded by fission of an established colony. Migration from the old to the new nest took place in 1 day. Eggs, larvae, pupae and 1 male were carried by ants which did not follow trails. Nest-mates were recruited to the new nest by tandem running. The old nest remained inhabited by 12 ants and 4 larvae, and the new nest held over 20 ants.
