On the relation between plerocercoid and adult tapeworm in pseudophyllidae cestoda

, : On the relation between plerocercoid and adult tapeworm in pseudophyllidae cestoda. Zoologischer Anzeiger 213(3-4): 161-169

Scolices of adult Spirometra erinacei-europaei (Rudolphi, 1819) and Spirometra sp. Odening and Bockhardt, 1982, from the definitive host were implanted after 2-10 wk into mice, where they formed again normal plerocercoids living in the experiment 13 days to 11 mo. Such a "secondary plerocercoid", 47 days old, after being re-fed to a cat formed again on adult tapeworm living for 20 mo. The interpretation of the plerocercoid (metacercoid) of Spirometra, as well as different species of Diphyllobothrium, and Ligula in the life-cycle is discussed. It is conceived as 3rd stage larva, if a "larval body" later not integrated in the adult worm is present as in Spirometra and Diphyllobothrium latum. The term postlarva is recommended for the cases in which no larval body is shed in the definitive host.
