Phenotypic analysis of the productive traits of rabbit 3. reproductive traits

, : Phenotypic analysis of the productive traits of rabbit 3. reproductive traits. Archivos de Zootecnia 33(126): 111-132

A total of 2663 litters were obtained by mating 138 sires with 1291 dams belonging to 2 lines, with intra-line mating; these were used in the experiment. Systematic environmental effects (season and number of birth) on several reproductive traits were estimated. Phenotypic correlations among traits, taking into account the systematic environmental effects previously estimated, were also calculated. Systematic environmental effects showed great variations among lines and annual periods, so the estimates are only applicable for the line and period in which they were obtained. Summer acts favorably on the traits that determine the interval between births. Autumn is the most unfavorable season for these traits and for the total number of rabbits born; this effect brings about a decrease in the number of live born, and a decrease in the litter weight at weaning. Nulliparous dams require fewer matings before giving birth to a litter. First birth has a negative effect on the total number born and on the mean weight at weaning.
