Photosynthetic activity in winter wheat cultivars varying in productivity

, : Photosynthetic activity in winter wheat cultivars varying in productivity. Izvestiya Akademii Nauk Kazakhskoi SSR Seriya Biologicheskaya (2): 11-16

Changes in the morphophysiological indices of photosynthetic activity due to the crowding factor were studied in winter wheat in Alma-Ata Oblast, Kazakh SSR, USSR, as were the morphophysiological indices of photosynthetic activity in low and highly productive cultivars. Productive winter wheat cultivars were characterized by a complex of morphophysiological indices which should be considered when breeding this crop for productivity. When selecting the optimal plant, the morphophysiological indices of photosynthetic activity observed at optimal stand density (in this case, 150-250 plants/m2 when 2-3 million germinating seeds/ha were sown), but not the maximum indices observed in an individual plant in thinly sown crops, should be considered. Not only the size of these indices, but the character of correlations between their complex and grain yield, as well, may serve as a productivity index in evaluating and breeding promising cultivars and forms.
