Phytoplankton and hydrography on the bay of cadiz southwestern spain from march 1980 to dec. 1983

, : Phytoplankton and hydrography on the bay of cadiz southwestern spain from march 1980 to dec. 1983. Investigacion Pesquera (Barcelona) 50(1): 69-82

Phytoplankton composition and abundance, spectrophotometric chlorophyll a analysis, and variations of environmental parameters (temperature and salinity) in the Bay of Cadiz has been studied throughout the years 1980 to 1983. The lowest values of chlorophyll a were found in the neighbourhood of landrepleshment zone. With regard to qualitative composition of phytoplankton, 133 taxonomic units were identified (94 diatoms and 35 dinoflagellates). In general, diatoms were predominant all time, although the proportion of dinoflaggelates increased in summertime. Freshwater species might appear owed important decrease of salinity due to occasional rainfalls. On the other hand, the most usual species were Chaetoceros didymus in summer and Skeletonema costatum in spring-summer, as well as separate blooms of Rhizosolenia stolterfothii, Leptocylindrus minimus and Biddulphia mobiliensis.
