The influence on platelet function of meals rich in either saturated or polyunsaturated fatty acids was studied in Type IV hyperlipidemia and in control subjects. Plasma lipids and platelet function were determined before, and three and five hours after isocaloric meals (900 kcal) rich in either saturated or in polyunsaturated fat. A significant increase in plasma triglycerides was found in both groups three hours after the fatty meal, which had decreased after five hours in only the normal subjects. Both meals caused a 15% increase in ADP-induced platelet aggregation in normal subjects, whereas this effect was found in the hyperlipidemic patients only after the meal rich in saturated fat. These changes in platelet function were not due to postprandial plasma chylomicron accumulation, since chylomicrons were found to inhibit platelet activities.
