The genetics of the melanic forms of S. albovenosa (Goeze) were studied by laboratory crosses. The forms were classified for the frequency of dark scales on the intravenal regions of the forewing. The uniform black form and the patterned intermediate are controlled by separate loci, the former being completely dominant to pale and epistatic to intermediate, and the latter, partially dominant to pale. The intensity of the whitish to yellowish background coloration is affected by the developing strategy, non-diapausing moths being paler than diapausing.
