Proline accumulation during water stress in resurrection plants

, : Proline accumulation during water stress in resurrection plants. Journal of Experimental Botany 30(114): 165-168

In leaves of resurrection plants [Eragrostis nindensis, Borya nitida, Xerophyta villosa, Sporobolus stapfianus, Coleochloa setifera, Selaginella dregii, Myrothamnus flabellifolia, Polypodium polypodiodes, Talbotia elegans, Ramonda pyrenaica, and Craterostigma plantagineum] dried intact, free proline increased in 9 spp. and remained unchanged or declined in 2 other tolerant spp. Infiltration of proline into hydrated resurrection leaves of 2 spp. (a relatively high accumulator of proline, Borya, and low accumulator, Myrothamnus) prior to dehydration did not improve the cells' survival rate and in some cases caused a decrease in survival. Apparently the extreme drought tolerance of resurrection plants is not related per se to proline levels.
