Properties of solutions used for intra articular injections and their effects on articular cartilage in animal experiments

, : Properties of solutions used for intra articular injections and their effects on articular cartilage in animal experiments. Beitraege zur Orthopaedie und Traumatologie 27(10): 552-559

Various solutions used for intraarticular injections as a means of treating arthrosis form an acid solution and are hyperosmotic. Fibrillar networks arranged parallel to the surface are observed on a scanning electron microscope following injection of a procaine/glucose mixture into rabbit knee joints. This is seen as an expression of a mild lesion of the surface of the cartilage. Light microscopic examinations show no differences between the injected and the control sides.
