Prospective study of adverse drug reactions of antihypertensive drugs in Thai outpatients

, : Prospective study of adverse drug reactions of antihypertensive drugs in Thai outpatients. Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand 68(5): 229-236

Adverse reactions of antihypertensive drugs were monitored prospectively in 1348 outpatients (57% female) in Ramathibodi Hospital. The patients were interviewed by trained observers using an open question and a check list of known adverse reactions at least twice after receiving the drugs. Patient's medical records were also reviewed. Six different groups of antihypertensive drugs were prescribed in the descending order: diuretics (49.9%), centrally acting drugs (16.8%), adrenergic blockers (16.3%), ganglionic neurone blockers (9.1%), direct vasodilators (7.8%) and inhibitor of renin-angiotensin system (0.1%). Fourty-two per cent of the patients reported some adverse effects. Central nervous system symptoms such as headache and dizziness were the most common adverse reactions. No serious adverse effects were noted.
