Radiological pelvimetry and the management of breech presentation at term a retrospective study

, : Radiological pelvimetry and the management of breech presentation at term a retrospective study. Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (Abingdon) 8(2): 119-123

A retrospective study was made of 244 mature breech deliveries in a Scottish district maternity hospital over a period of 3 years and the role of pelvimetry was assessed. A comparison was made between the condition of the babies whose births had or had not been preceded by radiological pelvimetry. The use of antenatal X-ray pelvimetry in the vaginal delivery group was associated with a better neonatal outcome, especially with regard to Apgar scores, birth trauma, duration of neonatal intensive care and neonatal mortality. Clinical pelvimetry was of limited value. There seems no reason to discontinue the practice of vaginal breech delivery in carefully selected patients at or near term if the pelvis is radiologically adequate.
