Ranunculus ficaria 5. cyto embryological analysis of ranunculus ficaria ssp calthifolius with b chromosomes

, : Ranunculus ficaria 5. cyto embryological analysis of ranunculus ficaria ssp calthifolius with b chromosomes. Acta Biologica Cracoviensia Series Botanica 23: 83-96

Two Hungarian mixed populations of the diploid taxon R. ficaria L. ssp. calthifolius (Rchb.) Arc. (2n = 16) and the tetraploid R. ficaria L. ssp. bulbifer (Marsden-Jones) Lawalree (2n = 32) were studied cytologically. B-chromosomes were discerned in some diploids only, in the number ranging from 1-8. They distinctly differed morphologically from the chromosomes of the basic A-set. Also different was their meiotic behavior. B-univalents (bivalents only sporadically) were observed in diakinesis and in the I metaphase; disturbed distribution to the poles and laggards in the I anaphase as well as abnormal tetrads with microcytes are the most characteristic features of microsporogenesis. Disturbances were observed also in macrosporogenesis. The resulting spores and afterwards male and female gametophytes showed cytological differentiation with regard to the number of B-chromosomes. No effect of B-chromosomes on pollen viability could be observed except their highest number (8 B-chromosomes) which decreased the viability of pollen. Regardless of presence of B-chromosomes, normal 7-nucleate embryosae and well-developed achenes were formed.
