Reproduction of the norway rat rattus norvegicus in the animal husbandry premises in north kazakh ssr ussr

, : Reproduction of the norway rat rattus norvegicus in the animal husbandry premises in north kazakh ssr ussr. Zoologicheskii Zhurnal 60(4): 587-594

It was established (1967-1979) that Norway rats reproduced throughout the year with a high intensity which changed markedly with respect to seasons. In spring (from March) a peak of reproduction is observed and in fall and winter the intensity of reproduction decreases. During the spring-summer period the percentage of pregnant females increases and embryonic mortality decreases 2 x as compared to winter; the mean number of embryos suffers slight changes. With increase of female weight, the portion of pregnant females, mean size of brood and frequency of embryonic resorption also increase. Intensity of reproduction is inversely dependent and embryonic mortality is directly dependent on population density.
