1. The respiratory quotient (RQ) of mound-nesting malleefowl (Leipoa ocellata) eggs averages 0.80 over the last 28 days of the 60-day incubation period. 2. Some non-respiratory carbon dioxide is released from the calcium carbonate of the eggshell as calcium is transferred to the embryo late in incubation. 3. Calculations indicate that significant amounts of non-lipid substrate are metabolized late in incubation. 4. The high RQ of incubating malleefowl eggs results in some mass loss due to respiratory gas exchange. This respiratory mass loss (RML) becomes significant late in incubation, so that on the day of hatch it accounts for 24% of the egg's daily mass loss.
