Responses of substantia nigra neurons to noxious stimulation

, : Responses of substantia nigra neurons to noxious stimulation. Brain Research 171(1): 121-130

Experiments were performed to determine whether substantia nigra neurons [of rats] respond to noxious stimulation. Some nigral neurons responded to both noxious radiant heat and intra-arterially administered bradykinin. Most nociceptive neurons were excited by noxious stimulation although some exhibited a reduction in firing rate. Following the injection of bradykinin, responses to noxious heat were reduced in magnitude for up to 1 h. Some nigral neurons are nociceptive. Further support for the suggestion that dopamine is involved in nociceptive mechanisms is provided. Bradykinin may represent a rather gross or non-specific form of noxious stimulation.
