Differences in frequency of silica bodies (amorphous silicagel, SiO2 .cntdot. nH2O) in bulliform cells due to relative positions in rice leaf blades were investigated using a soft X-ray irradiation combined with an image processing soft ware (SIAM), which was previously programmed to calculate and treat statistically the distributions and areas of silica bodies in individual portions of the leaves. Third and 5th leaves, and flag leaves were used; the former were obtained from rice plants, cv. Tanginbozu, cultured in a growth cabinet, and the latters were from each 149 cultivars of rice grown in 1/5000a pots with soil or in paddy fields, respectively. Number of silica bodies per 1 mm2 of the 5th leaf increased gradually from base to tip of the leaf blade; about 50% of the total number of silica bodies in whole leaf blade were distributed in the upper 30% area of the total leaf blade. In contrast, the silica bodies at the base were less 1/10 in density than those in tip portion. The silica only frequency in flag leaves differed significantly for the left and right sides of the midrib; only 8% of the 87 cultivars grown in a paddy field had equal silica body frequencies on the both sides of the midrib. Japanese cultivars and foreign cultivars were not different from each other in this tendency. Number of silica bodies in 1 cm length of each bulliform cell row differed due to the position of the intercoastal zone in the flag leaves, cv. TeTep and Norin No. 44; the number was lowest at loci immediately adjacent to both sides of the midrib and the large vascular bundles, and highest midway between pairs of large vascular bundles. Soft X-ray radiographs of the 3rd and 5th leaves showed a zigzag pattern of high X-ray density crossing the midrib. Many different degrees of transpiration were considered to occur at different loci over the surface of a leaf blade, especially corresponding to either side of the midrib and to the distance from large conductive tissues in the lamina.
