Study of some biologically active substances in patients with meningococcal infection

, : Study of some biologically active substances in patients with meningococcal infection. Vestnik Akademii Meditsinskikh Nauk SSSR (12): 21-25

Histamine and serotonin levels in blood and 5-hydroxyindole-acetic acid (HIAA) level in daily urine of adult human patients were studied. Daily HIAA excretion decreased sharply and steadily throughout the infection. The decrease in histamine and serotonin was affected by antihistamine and antiserotonin drugs and antibiotics administered to patients. Further studies on enzymes and free and thrombocyte-bound serotonin fractions are necessary to determine disturbances in biogenic amine metabolism.
