Subspeciation of ctenophthalmus agyrtes siphonaptera hystrichopsyllidae in fennoscandia denmark and iceland

, : Subspeciation of ctenophthalmus agyrtes siphonaptera hystrichopsyllidae in fennoscandia denmark and iceland. Entomologica Scandinavica Supplement (15): 141-152

An evaluation of structural differences observed in material of Ctenophthalmus agyrtes s. l. from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland points to the presence of 3 forms which roughly illustrate gradual changes in populations in a direction from southwest to north/northeast. Two subspecies are involved: C. a. agyrtes sensu stricto and C. a. fennicus, with intergrades along the Baltic coast and on islands in the Baltic Sea. Intergrades between C. a. fennicus and C. a. kleinschmidtianus are found along the eastern border of the range of the former. Dispersal of C. agyrtes s. l. is enhanced by its reduced host-specificity which facilitated its introduction into Iceland in fairly recent time and its fast dispersal in postglacial time over southern and central Scandinavia up to Finland where a peripheral race (C. a. fennicus) has evolved.
