A surgical technique is proposed and described whereby the development of a cardiac aneurysm may be achieved in .apprxeq. 1/3 of the animals with an infarction attended by ECG changes typical for infarction (in the acute stage, -a rise in ST; in chronic stages, a depression of Q and a reduction of R). The method consists of the following features and advantages: dissection of the chest cavity; undisturbed cardiac topography during ligation of the coronary artery (the heart is not removed from the chest cavity); the use of tracheal intubation, endotracheal anesthesia and artificial respiration; the use of a special retractor-type instrument to immobilize the heart; and layer-by-layer hermetic sealing of the chest cavity, to prevent postoperative pneumothorax. High occlusion of the left coronary artery was performed in 61 rats (200-350 g) of which 72.1% (44 rats) lived from 1 day to 6 mo; 57% of them (35 rats) lived 1.5 to 6 mo. The surgical technique was evaluated by postmortem examination.
