Glomus macrocarpus, a vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus helps potato plants assimilate more P from the soil, thereby producing larger amounts of dry matter. Inoculating the seed tuber with the spores was more successful than inoculating the soil. In an infertile soil, mycorrhizal plants absorbed 8 times more P and shaved 5 times greater growth than non-mycorrhizal ones. Less easily available forms of native soil P were mobilized by the endophyte, particularly from soils low in fertility. Under natural conditions, only 23% of the potato fields carried spores or had root infection with endomycorrhizal fungi.
