T lymphocytes in human cancer 2. effects of radio therapy and controlled nutritional intake

, : T lymphocytes in human cancer 2. effects of radio therapy and controlled nutritional intake. Irish Journal of Medical Science 149(10): 379-385

Patients (51) with malignant disease, who received a definitive course of radiotherapy, had their T lymphocyte mitogen responsiveness assessed during this treatment. These patients were randomized into 2 groups: one was given supplemented oral nutrition during treatment; in the 2nd, control group, no specific dietary advice was given. The blastogenic responsiveness of lymphocytes to the mitogens Con[concanavalin]A and PHA [phytohemagglutinin] were reduced after radiation therapy, varying in duration from between 2-3 wk. The extent of depression of cell-mediated immunity did not appear to be influenced by the actual site which was irradiated. Dietary supplementation failed to alleviate the diminution in lymphocyte responsiveness to PHA, observed following radiotherapy. Con A-sensitive lymphocytes apparently retained more of their responsiveness, after the course of treatment in diet-supplemented patients, than they did in control patients.
