The chronic toxicity to daphnia magna of acridine a representative aza arene present in synthetic fossil fuel products and waste waters

, : The chronic toxicity to daphnia magna of acridine a representative aza arene present in synthetic fossil fuel products and waste waters. Environmental Pollution Series A Ecological & Biological 24(1): 21-30

First instar D. magna were exposed for 28 days to 0.1-3.2 mg/l of azaarene, acridine, in a renewal type system. The effects of acridine were measured on 6 toxicity criteria: survival, age of 1st brood release, occurrence of primiparous instar, number of broods produced per female, number of young produced per female and number of young per brood. No observed-effects concentrations (NOEC) were estimated for each toxicity criterion. The 48 h LC50 of acridine to 1st instar D. magna was 2.3 mg/l. The most sensitive criteria for estimating NOEC were those that were indices of reproductive rate of D. magna: total number of young produced per female, number of broods produced per female and number of young per brood. Estimated NOEC for all criteria were 0.4 mg/l. The least sensitive criterion was the occurrence of the primiparous instar, which was apparently unaffected by test concentrations of acridine < 48 h LC50. Both acute and chronic toxicities of acridine to D. magna were moderately high compared with those of other chemicals. Acridine was more toxic than phenol, quinoline and naphthalene. Acridine was less toxic than the herbicides acrolein and trifluran and the insecticides heptachlor and endosulfan. Organic bases, including azaarenes, may be present in synthetic fuel wastewaters at concentrations .gtoreq. 100 mg/l. Given their refractory nature and moderately high toxicity to a sensitive aquatic species, releases of organic bases may pose a potential hazard to aquatic biota.
