, : The cultivation of the rumen ciliate dasytricha ruminantium. Bulletin of the College of Agriculture Utsunomiya University 11(1): 9-16

A simple method of cultivating D. ruminantium was established. All the experiments were carried out in 100 ml conical flasks containing 100 ml medium, gassed with CO2, sealed with a rubber stopper and incubated at 39.degree. C. A small number of Dasytricha were present in the suspension of mixed protozoa for 6 mo., when the culture was discontinued. The culture of mixed protozoa was prepared from the rumen content of a sheep, maintained by administration of 450 mg of powdered clover and 50 mg of a feed mixture and by replacing 50 ml of the supernatant fluid with fresh salt solution every 6 days. Dasytricha grew in the presence of Entodinium simplex or E. caudatum, but not in their absence. The protozoan cultivation is described. Although no other species of protozoa was present, Dasytricha grew well if a frozen suspension of E. caudatum was supplied. The generation time over the period of 22-34 days of culture was 1.3 days. Discontinuance of the administration of suspension resulted in lack of growth.
