The early eocene artiodactyls of western europe 1

, : The early eocene artiodactyls of western europe 1. Bulletin du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle Section C Sciences de la Terre Paleontologie Geologie Mineralogie 5(3): 281-334

Study of the early Eocene artiodactyls of western Europe shows a remarkable diveristy within the group; CUISITHERIUM gen. nov., a dacrytheriid is proposed, and 2 Dichobunid genera, Bunophorus and Aumelasia, can be added to the 2 members of the latter family. Diacodexis is represented at the base of the Sparnacian by forms that are more primitive (D. gazini from Rians) than the 1st members (from the early Wasatch) of this genus in North America; it seems to be of Eurasiatic origin. Diacodexis evolved along several lines: that which is the most clearly established follows the stages of Diacodexis sp. (from Dormaal), D. varleti sp. nov. (from Conde-en-Brie) and D. cf. varleti (from Sezanne-Broyes, Saint-Agnan, Grauves, etc.) It also gave rise to the Lutetian genus Messelobunodon (from Geiseltal and messel). Protodichobune, a monospecific genus (P. oweni) derived from an autochtonous Diacodexis, characterizes the later part of the Cuisian, having been found at Saint-Agnan, Grauves, Cuis, Chavot, Monthelon, Mancy and Mas de Gimel. It probably gave rise to the Cebochoeridae. Aumelasia, descended from Protodichobune during the Late Cuisian (A. menieli sp. nov. from Mancy, Grauves, Mont-Bernon and Monthelon), is known until the end of the Lutetian (A. gabineaudi from Aumelas). The North American genus Bunophorus is identified for the 1st time in Europe with the Late Sparnacian species B. cappettai sp. nov. from Mutigny and Pourcy. This species of Bunophorus could be related to the Lutetian genus Buxobune. Cuisitherium (type specis C. lyddekeri = Protodichobune lyddekeri Lemoine) is a Dacrytheriid common in the Late Cuisian localities. Its presence at the ase of the Cusian (Cuisitherium sp. from Avenay) bears witness to the very early origin of this strictly European family. The systematic problems dealt with have lead us to reconsider the different subfamily units within the Dichobunidae. Certain taxa from the Eocene of North America and southeast Asia were discussed. Beginning with the early Eocene the Artiodactyls have evolved independently in North America, in Europe and perhaps also in southeast Asia.
