The functional morphology of male genitalia and notes on the system and phylogenetic relationships of the mining moths of the superfamily gracillarioidea lepidoptera

, : The functional morphology of male genitalia and notes on the system and phylogenetic relationships of the mining moths of the superfamily gracillarioidea lepidoptera. Entomologicheskoe Obozrenie 66(1): 52-65

A study was made of the functional and comparative morphology of male genitalia of 8 moth species (Bucculatrix crataegi, Parornix cotoneasterella, Callisto denticulella, Caloptilia syringella, Calybites phasianipennella, Ornixola caudulatella, Lithocolletis pyrifoliella and Lyonetia clerkella). The position of the superfamily Gracillarioidea in Papilionomorpha is discussed, including the families Bucculatrigidae, Phyllocnistidae and Lymonetiidae. A description is given of the phylogenetic relationships of various mining moth subfamilies. The study confirmed the taxonomic status of the superfamily Gracillarioidea (Stainton, 1854) and its 3 subfamilies (Gracillariinae, Lithocolletinae and Ornichinae).
