The influence of anaerobiosis and nitrogen di oxide on the human erythrocyte

, : The influence of anaerobiosis and nitrogen di oxide on the human erythrocyte. Environmental Research 11(1): 5-12

NO2 in concentrations of 224-510 ppm retains its ability to increase the calculated redox ratio [NAD+]/[NADH] of human erythrocytes despite exposure to relatively hypoxic atmospheres. This is interpreted as further evidence that this effect of NO2 is mediated by a mechanism other than lipid peroxidation. The mechanism may involve NO2-Hb interaction. Since neither the reduction in redox ratio induced by hypoxia nor the increase induced by NO2 are obscured with combined N2 + NO2 exposure, different parts of the Hb molecule possibly are altered by O2 and NO2.
